Day Thirteen...

Yes, I am quite aware that I did not post yesterday.  I feel asleep at 9PM and slept for twelve hours.  I'm not even going to apologize that my body needed rest.  I'm already pretty proud of myself for making it this far so I'm not stopping because I missed one day.

The question really is:  Have your
purchased tickets for our fundraiser this coming Friday, or if not have you looked at other ways in which to help support Safe Passage?

Day Eleven...

If you're just tuning in, and it's Day Eleven of my challenge, if you don't go all the way back to Day One at least go back a few postings.  I'm in the middle of explaining Safe Passage, a non-profit organization that is very much important to me.

Today I am going to give a glimpse of sights similar to what Hanley Denning saw when she first went into inner city Guatemala ten years ago.  It isn't easy to digest, but it is very necessary in telling the entire story.  I promise, tomorrow will be easier.

Day Ten...

Tonight I am going to share with you some photos of the faces of Safe Passage.  These are faces that met Hanley as she toured inner city Guatemala and the garbage dump for the first time.  These faces would greet you if you visited Safe Passage in Guatemala or if you are unable to go to Guatemala they greet you here.

I took these photos on my last visit.  I wanted to show these faces, alone, with no backdrop to stereotype.  These faces could be ones you meet every day on the street, they could be you or me, or a model in a GAP advertisement.  These faces deserve every opportunity, human right and chance to succeed as anyone else.  I'm looking forward to witnessing them do so!

Day Nine...

Hanley Denning founded Safe Passage ten years ago.  She was an educator in the United States and was studying Spanish in Antigua, Guatemala.  As Hanley once told the story to me, she had a friend, whom was a nun, that convinced Hanley to go with her to visit inner city Guatemala and its poorest of the poor.  It was here that Hanley set her eyes on the most horrific sight she had ever seen, people sifting through the garbage dump's trash to exist.  Hanley said later, when she looked back upon that day, she realized her friend had taken her there for a reason.  She knew Hanley would do something.

Do something she did!  She sold all of her belongings that sat in storage in the United States, which totaled around $5,000, and began the non-profit, Safe Passage (Camino Seguro).  She began by paying for the fees and supplies to send a handful of children to public school, assisted them with their homework and gave them a healthy meal once a day.  Now, only ten years later, Safe Passage serves over 550 of the children and families that live near the Guatemala City garbage dump.  I cannot begin to blog about every single part of Safe Passage that is fabulous.  However, I will touch on a few of my top favorites in the next couple days.  Seriously, go to the
website and learn more.  It's fascinating.

Tonight I am paying tribute to Hanley Denning, whom is no longer with us due to a tragic circumstance.  I was fortunate to have met her, work with her and laugh with her (she had such a great laugh!).   She believed in all of us and each of our unique ability to help her help these children and families.  Her death is still unimaginable, but it also has brought forth a new determination which is to never let her vision fade.  For those whom will never have the oppotunity to meet Hanley, you still may by learning more about Safe Passage and becoming involved.  We need you!

Day Eight...

June 26th + Traverse City + Marta Gomez = Safe Passage Benefit Concert

Take a look over all concert information and feel free to pass the information on.  Please note, too, there are many other dates/locations.  Also, check out the
Safe Passage website.  It is one of my favorite organizations!!  In fact, this might take a few blogs to explain.  For now, do your research!
