We are looking for people of all ages, sizes, ethnicities, and genders to add to our database of interesting people to model for future photo projects.  I am collaborating with two other highly regarded local photographers, Brian Confer and Michael Poehlman, and hosting a casting call this Friday, June 11th, at  Priceless Photography's studio in preparation for upcoming commercial productions.

All kinds of people can model, and we need ALL kinds of people.  If you are experienced, or just looking to try a new adventure, stop by the studio anytime from 9am-1pm on Friday.  Wear comfortable, colorful, and seasonal (summery) clothing.  Bring your smile and your personality.  We will take a quick headshot and have a bio sheet to complete for yourself or your child/children.  It will take 10-15 minutes total.  You will then be on our list, and open the opportunity to model for this talented team of photographers and the variety of productions in which we are involved.

Of course I waited until spring flowers were blooming to sit down and choose my favorites from their session to post on our blog! 

The one thing I would like zero in on in this particular blog post is how lucky we are to have great couples every year to work with.  Emily and Justin are no exception.  The day we met in Glen Arbor to take their engagement photos was clear but cold.  Once down on the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, too, you may as well knock an additional ten degrees off your thermometer!  Not once did Emily and Justin complain and we took photos for over two hours.  Of course we let them warm up from time to time, but they were troopers and because of it they have awesome photos!   - Beth

As I sit this quiet morning sipping on my coffee and watching the popcorn shaped snowflakes gently fall outside the studio, I reflect on today's date and what it truly signifies to my family and me.  Today is Ellie's birthday, my niece whom blessed our lives for 8 ½ months as she grew inside my sister's belly.  We made plans and envisioned our future with her as if we already knew her.  Oh the manicures and pedicures we would have while the boys watched football!  The shopping trips, the teenage girl drama, dealing with her first heartbreak and the eventual day we would help her plan her wedding and watch her walk down the aisle.  And then she didn't make it.  It was as if God and the universe had played the cruelest joke imaginable.  It still is, four years later, as we try to wrap our hearts around what could have possibly gone wrong.


So today, I'm afraid, this blog post is not about the beauty of life and all the great things going on for Priceless Photography.  It is a remembrance for our sweet Ellie, and all the other babies that have not quite made it into our lives around the world.  We know we are not alone.  A candle is lit and a prayer for her brief presence in our lives, which caused so much joy, has been said.  We will never forget you, Ellie, nor stop loving you.  Happy Birthday!

This past spring I went on quite the bee adventure with my friends Nels and Walker, whom are amateur bee keepers and manage their own honey production on farmland in Yuba.  Our mission was to create some images for Nels' article in the Summer 2009 edition of Edible Grand Traverse.  How I wish someone would have followed us with a video camera because I think we, not the bees, were focus of the evening.  And, had we uploaded our bee adventure on YouTube it would have gone viral, for sure!

Why such a comedy?  Well, Nels and Walker are crazy enough to go after swarms of bees in their spare time.  On this particular evening they went after a swarm on a tree limb in their barely protected bodies as I stood by with no protection (thanks guys) and documented.  Unfortunately, most of the swarm photos I took are garbage due to the lighting but let me tell you it sure was interesting and it ended with several choice words and stings on the amateur bee keepers' bodies!

We then proceeded on to their hives, which are in wooden boxes.  Smoke is used to help sedate the bees and make them less angry when they are disturbed by humans.  Not certain how well it works because I think there may have been a few more stings involved.  I win the prize for not being stung.  If it makes you feel better, Nels and Walker, I was mowing my parents' lawn last week and was stung good on my heel and I thought of both of you!     

Of course, when the light was at its evening best, the bees were most agitated, probably because it was their bedtime.  It reminded me of a family photo session with young children during July in Northern Michigan.  Sigh, such is life!

I decided to end the 30-Day Challenge because family is first and between family time on Long Lake near Traverse City, and a full weekend of weddings, there was little time to blog.  Yawn!  At least a week in front of a computer is still in the cards as we have five recent weddings to edit.  It sure beats the alternative, though.

Welcome home from Costa Rica, Raffi!  We are ready to rock the rest of the summer and are happy you are back to help. 

Below are a few shots of sunset on Long Lake yesterday evening.  I am so lucky to have had many sunsets on Long Lake as this is where I grew up and one of the reasons I chose to let my phone go dead and not open my laptop for two days.  But, the most important reason is my family.  Loud, obnoxious, boisterous, and full of huge amounts of love I would not be the person I am without you!

After seven years of photographing weddings I am going to say how lucky I am to have had such great brides and grooms to work with.  Seriously, I'm not here to report any horror stories other than ones about myself.  Such as a wedding I photographed in Elk Rapids when I backed up into the baptismal pool as the bride and groom walked back up the aisle together.  Yes, you read that correctly, I sat down in a baptismal pool, was mortified, and later on the priest told me I was "well blessed". 

I knew last winter when when Logan and Chris walked into the studio with their parents that if we all worked together we would have a fabulous day.  Today was the day and fabulous it was!  At every wedding I photograph I have moments that strike me.  One of today's moments was during the cake cutting.  After the bride and groom had cut their cake I realized the entire bridal party (eighteen of them minus the bride and groom) were up from the bridal table and watching.  They then proceeded to hang out and enjoy each others company until dinner was served.  I thought it was pretty cool because I don't see that often.  Logan and Chris, you have an incredible bunch of friends and family whom, I think, would all make great presidents of your fan club.  Congratulations and thanks for sharing such an amazing day with us!

...4th-of-July weekend, family and friends, sunshine, laughter, beer, BBQ, fireworks, jello shots...

I am going to stand on my soapbox, for a brief moment, and remind those of you out there to not waste so much on this holiday weekend here in the United States.  Do you really need plastic forks and disposable plates when it takes seconds to wash the real ones?   Could you perhaps pick your fireworks litter off the bottom of the lake or empty field you lit it off over?  How about recycling everything that you are able to recycle vs. only the returnables that give you money back?  That's it.  I'm stepping down off my soapbox now.  Have a safe, happy, and as litter-free as possible holiday weekend!

I am sitting in a Dairy Queen parking lot on my way back from some family time in the Detroit area.  Yes, DQ has wifi!  I was told by my cousin, Sandy, that I should give up my challenge since I've already missed two days.  She said if I stopped eating candy for thirty days and ate some half-way through I would have to start over.  She also told me I should have picked a more reasonable goal, like three days!  Well Sandy, I'm choosing to keep on keeping on.  This isn't candy and continuing on keeps me disciplined.  More tomorrow.  We still need to drive back to Traverse City!

Yesterday was one of the best.  Joni and Michael, whom I've known since I moved back to Traverse City six years ago, were married at Black Star Farms.  What an incredible day and celebration!  Thank you for including us!

Joni's veil was long and amazing and she wore it well.  The best part was that she wore it during the entire day after she put it on.  When that veil was too long to be practical, she would just wrap it around her arm and continue on.  Way to rock the veil, Joni.  Congratulations to you and Michael!  I've included a veil snap below for you!
